Financial Crime: Former City trader’s rate rigging conviction overturned

When convictions are overturned years after the event, it raises important questions not only about individual cases, but about the criminal justice process itself.

The Court of Appeal has overturned the conviction of former Deutsche Bank trader Christian Bittar in the long-running Euribor rate-rigging cases, following a series of recent decisions that have seen other LIBOR and Euribor-related convictions quashed.

For fraud and financial crime professionals, the story is a timely reminder that:

> Robust investigations must be matched by robust legal foundations

> Fair trial rights remain central, even in high-profile misconduct cases

> Prosecutors, investigators and experts must continually challenge assumptions and established interpretations

> Miscarriages of justice can have profound consequences for individuals, organisations and public confidence

Whether viewed through a fraud, regulatory, governance or ethics lens, the case highlights the importance of getting both the facts and the law right.

As financial crime professionals, we should be prepared to examine outcomes critically, learn from past cases and ensure future investigations are built on transparency, fairness and evidence.
