£61,110 lost. Life savings gone. And the victim ultimately had to bring a private prosecution.

A sobering romance fraud case from Cornwall demonstrates how apparently small requests for financial help can escalate into devastating losses.

A woman was persuaded to transfer £61,110 after meeting a man through a dating app. Over a period of months, she was given a succession of explanations involving accommodation problems, health issues, expected funds and legal difficulties. The offender admitted fraud by false representation and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Perhaps the most concerning aspect of the case is what happened when the victim sought help.

The court heard that she had initially alerted police and Report Fraud but ultimately brought a private prosecution. The sentencing judge ordered her costs to be paid from central funds, saying she had been “let down so badly by the system”.

For the counter-fraud community, there are two important lessons here.

First, romance fraud is not simply about persuading someone to part with money. It can involve the sustained exploitation of trust and emotional pressure.

Second, victim confidence depends not only on encouraging people to report fraud, but on what happens after they report it.

How do we ensure victims have confidence that reporting fraud will lead somewhere?
