    Safer Internet Day (SID) is organised by Insafe in February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world. Safer Internet Day 2013 will be the tenth edition of the event, and will take place on Tuesday 5 February 2013.

    The number of reported crimes committed over the internet in the West Midlands has increased five fold in four years. In 2012 West Midlands Police received almost 500 reports of online crime compared to 100 in 2008.

    A poll of 1,000 office workers across the UK showed that nearly 60% of UK office workers receive phishing emails every day and 6% receive more than 10 a day.

The figures demonstrate a new challenge and it is important that forces prioritise social networking crimes that cause genuine harm.
