Action Fraud has encouraged people to understand the threats of romance fraud.

Romance scams are when criminals coerce people into sending money to them after convincing the victim that they are in a genuine relationship.

The criminal will usually go to great lengths to gain the victim's trust so that requests for money does not raise alarm bells, usually appealing for financial help such as emergency medical costs or for transport costs in order to visit the victim if they are overseas.

Campaigners have criticised the “staggering” cost of government plans to require photo identification for voting after an official impact assessment reported that the policy could cost up to £180m over the next decade.
